Oregon’s newest state park, Cottonwood Canyon in eastern Oregon opened this fall.
The 8,000 acres of scrub, grass and sagebrush along 16 miles of the lower John Day River are about 173 miles, a three-hour drive and a century and a half back in time from Salem.
Chris Havel, the department’s associate director, said the site gave an opportunity for the department to meet the public’s desire for more and larger sites on the John Day.
